The untimely death of Jane “Janey” McAdams Thompson has left many in deep mourning. Janey was only 20 years old when she died suddenly from a blood clot problem. Although her stay with us was short-lived, she impacted every person who crossed her path enormously. This blog post is an attempt to celebrate her life, acknowledge her accomplishments, and consider the legacy she will be remembered for.

Early Life and Education
Janey grew up in Charlotte, NC, where she learned to appreciate community and education. She performed exceptionally well academically from a very early age until adulthood. At Myers Park High School, Janey did not only perform well in academics but also thrived in extracurricular activities, including jazz band and wind ensemble, where she played clarinet.
She had an equal passion for sports as well. For four consecutive years at Myers Park High School, Janey was part of their varsity basketball and softball teams before being crowned Female Athlete of the Year 2022 after receiving all-conference honors in basketball. In addition to being captain for both teams, her genuine friendship with fellow teammates resulted in the most enjoyable days when they used to crack jokes together in locker rooms or bus rides.
Wake Forest University Journey
Second-year biophysics student Janey attended Wake Forest University during her college years. As a physics scholarship holder at Wake Forest, Janey remained on the Dean’s list each semester throughout her tenure there. Her commitment to studies is always matched with active participation in campus activities. She played intramural sports and club women’s basketball until an injury in November 2023 led her to transition to coaching.
Beyond sports, Janey was a vibrant presence on campus. She volunteered for Wake Radio, was an active member of the Tri Delta sorority, and participated in the pre-dental health professional society. Her enthusiasm for Wake Forest sports was unmatched; she attended every home football, basketball, and baseball game, embodying the spirit of a true superfan.
Impact and Legacy
Janey’s impact extended far beyond her academic and athletic achievements. She was a loyal friend known for her wicked humor and exceptional gift-giving skills. Her ability to bring joy and laughter to any situation made her a beloved figure among her peers. Janey’s kindness and humility were evident in all her interactions, and she had a unique talent for making everyone feel valued.
Her love for puzzles, card games, and competitions highlighted her playful nature. Janey’s infectious smile always accompanied her competitive spirit, whether it was trivia, board games, or corn hole. She cherished time at Ocean Isle Beach, Lake Wylie, and shooting hoops in the backyard with her family.
Remembering Janey
Memories of Janey will forever be cherished by her parents, Bo and Scottie Thompson, her brother and “built-in best friend” Hank Thompson, and her dog Phyllis. She is also survived by her grandfather Ronald Stone and his friend Gail Bauman, grandparents Tom and Barbara Thompson, aunts and uncles Jeff and Amy Stone, Craig and Ellen Thompson, Bennett and Lauren Thompson, and cousins Sam and Charles Stone, Alyse Clements, and Drew, Mollie, Charlie, Gray, Mary Laughton, McAdams, and Ridge Thompson.
Her friends and family see Janey Thompson’s life as a shining beacon of light who embraced everyday life’s excellent and joyous moments. Her close circle of new and old associates will always recall her for the fun and laughter she brought into their lives.
